Last night I tried submitting a site to the Open Directory only to be confronted with the following error message when I clicked on Suggest A Site
The requested URL /cgi-bin/add.cgi was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Its weird to see a website of this stature collapse like this. I guess its been losing ground on the popular Web 2.0 sites like Wikipedia where a directory of up-to-date links is available next to relevant content. Theyve only got themselves to blame really, the response times for directory submissions have always been far too slow for my liking.
All the same, I wish they would get their act together! A linkback from the Open Directory still provides a hell of a boost when it comes to PR and SERPS.
